The Cnr Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (Cnr Iriss) is pleased to host the seminar “Civic Computing for Youth Participation in Colombia: Leveraging Data Literacy”, presented by Prof. Camilo Vieira, Assistant Professor at the Department of Education, Universidad del Norte (Colombia). The event will take place on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at the Cnr Hunanieties Hub in Naples.
The seminar will offer an opportunity to reflect on the intersections between youth participation, digital practices, and civic education. In an era where youth participation is increasingly shaped by digital interactions, the development of critical data literacy skills is essential for empowering young people as civic actors. The project presented by Prof. Camilo Vieira explores how youth aged 15–24 in Barranquilla (Colombia) engage in civic life through the lens of data literacy.
Adopting a design-based research approach, the initiative co-develops learning environments that aim to build not only technical capacities—such as data visualization, interpretation, and storytelling—but also to foster critical reflection and dialogue on local civic issues. The project investigates how young people use data to better understand their realities and articulate possible pathways for change. The methodology includes iterative workshops, training sessions, and community-based projects led by youth participants, supported by both qualitative and quantitative data collection.
During the seminar, Prof. Vieira will present the conceptual framework of the project and share preliminary findings from a pilot study conducted in Colombia. These early insights illustrate how youth conceptualize civic problems, engage with data, and develop a sense of agency. The findings contribute to the growing field of civic computing, highlighting its potential as a pathway for more inclusive, informed, and empowered youth participation in democratic life. Paolo Landri, Director of Cnr Iriss, will serve as discussant, facilitating an open conversation on the broader implications of civic computing for inclusive and participatory education.
The seminar is part of a growing collaboration between Cnr Iriss and Universidad del Norte, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that supports joint research initiatives, scientific cooperation, international project development, science diplomacy, and visiting exchange programmes for researchers and academic staff.
