Business and Human Rights Summer School 2018

The Summer School, started on the 18th June 2018 and ended on 22ndJune 2018, has provided the participants (students, researchers, NGO campaigners, lawyers, CSR experts and other private-sector practitioners) with comprehensive knowledge of the legal mechanisms and tools applicable in the field of business and human rights while keeping up with current relevant developments at national, regional and international level.

The Course focused the content of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, adopted in 2011, as well as on their implementation at national and international level. Also, particular attention was devoted to the ongoing discussions on the Draft UN Treaty on Business and Human Rights. Well-known experts and academicians in B&HRs area have held extremely interesting and insightful lectures; among the others: Nadia Bernaz (Wageningen University & Research); Tara Van Ho (University of Essex); Sheldon Leader (University of Essex); Daniel Leader (Leigh Day); Jernej Letnar Černič (Graduate School of Government and European Studies); Fabrizio Petri (President of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Human Rights – CIDU).

The Summer ended with the keynote speech of Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque, judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Lectures were organized around three modules:

  • the State duty to protect human rights;
  • the corporate responsibility to respect human rights;
  • and the victims’ access to remedy.

The Summer, the first in Italy concerning this subject-matter, is the result of the scientific collaboration of CNR-IRISS with the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, the University of Milan, the Human Rights International Corner NGO and the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU).
