Characteristics of Italian ports are linked to their location, which remains strongly rooted inside urban systems. Port planning can conflict with city planning, creating a condition of inertia that can prevents ports development. The collaboration between cities and ports on common objectives is the fundamental condition to prevent conflicts and on which to orient policies focused on port growth and urban development, as well as to the capitalize on maritime heritage. The aim of this article is to explore two different case study carried out thanks to the collaboration between port authorities and cities in the Tuscany region. The two projects show the importance of city-port integration strategies in waterfront development and port heritage enhancement. The first one refers to the Marina di Carrara port transformation, with the functional and environmental improvement of the port-city interface. The second one refers to the city-port of Livorno and maritime heritage enhancing and preservation in waterfront development strategies.
