Advancing urban sustainable development through innovative education. First Training Event of the Erasmus+ project PS-U-GO
On 25-27 September, the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (Cnr Iriss) together with the other project’s partners (University of Cyprus, Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg, Social Fringe: Interesting Untold Stories, Palermo Urban Solution Hub, and Urban Foxes) take part in the first Training Event of the Erasmus + project PS-U-GO “Education in Living Labs: Participatory Skills for sustainable Urban Governance” in Brussels (Belgium).
PS-U-GO will implement Urban Living Labs (ULLs) as educational spaces involving stakeholders from the quadruple helix to experiment and test ideas and solutions to urban challenges. The ambition of the project is to enable place-based civic participation to address issues of public concern in respect to common values. The aim is to equip students with advanced participatory and soft skills for sustainable urban governance through innovative education, set in real-life environments. The project will review and map existing ULL methodologies and participatory approaches to establish a pedagogic framework of situated learning and a strategy for co-creation. Online and in-person training will prepare the students to take part in their local ULLs, which will be implemented in four cities: Cottbus, Naples, Nicosia, Petralia Sottana (Palermo). The ULLs will be accompanied by a process of reflection – through qualitative research – and formal validation of educational outcomes.
The training event held in Brussels is part of the WP3 focused on Participatory Skills and Knowledge Co-Creation, led by Cnr Iriss. The initiative is developed specifically within the Activity 3.1 Participatory approaches for public spaces led by SF:ius and was organised by Urban Foxes in the valuable venue of the Track in the Northern Station. TRACK is an experimental crossroad linking creation, education and performance in Brussels’ North station. An urban lab for research into shared and mixed space usage, new forms of collaboration and a creative economy that is social, circular and financially sustainable.
The programme is very full and includes a first warm-up day with familiarisation sessions on the site, sessions on getting to know each other, and concludes with the formal presentation of the partners and the ULLs already carried out by them. The Cnr Iriss research team will be represented by Stefania Ragozino and Gabriella Esposito who will present the ULL experience they have scientifically supervised: the ‘Permanent Laboratory Lido Pola – LP2’ carried out at the Lido Pola in the Bagnoli district (Naples, IT) and co-organised by the associations 4Raw City Sound, Needle – Urban Acupuncture and Jolie Rouge.
The second day will be spent deepening the case studies conducted by Urban Foxes, and the first Transnational Project Meeting will be held in the afternoon. The third day will focus on the co-creation of a common vocabulary on the nature of ULL, also thanks to the participatory and dynamic methods promoted for all activities by Urban Foxes, and a final Evaluation Session & Visiting Good Practices.
The next training event will be held in Naples and co-organised by the Cnr Iriss and SF:ius in March 2025.
