Objectives and contents

Under the EMBRACE project, aimed at sustainable management of marine biological waste and quarry dust and restoration of degraded soils, the IRISS activities include:

Task 1 Valorization of marine bio-waste, quarry dust and anaerobic digestate by composting;

Task 2 Ecosystem services and collaborative approaches for sustainable regeneration processes.

Task 1 investigates the opportunity of generating high quality soil fertilizer or amendment by traditional and worm composting. The latter benefits of worm interaction with other soil invertebrates and microorganisms, which boost the composting process and improve physical and biochemical properties of the compost. It will be utilized in field tests for evaluating effectiveness in restoring fertility and biodiversity of degraded soils.

Task 2 investigates the territorial process triggered by the project, from material procurement to the testing phase, for identifying institutional, cultural, socio-economic barriers and opportunities to support implementation in selected areas. Knowledge transfer processes and involvement of institutional actors and stakeholders will be promoted, supported by community engagement approaches and tool.
