Stefania Oppido

Stefania Oppido is Technologist at IRISS since 2014. Architect, PhD in Building and Environmental Recovery, she attended a master in “Recovery and enhancement of historical centres”. Since 2010, she has been working continuously at the CNR. Currently, she is scientific responsible of the research project “Territorial imbalances and marginalisation processes. The landscape as a driver for place-based regeneration of inner areas and small villages”. Within this field she is co-coordinator of the Technical Group “Inner Areas and surroundings” within the Italian Scientific Society of Urban Planners (SIU). Expert in Architectural Technology, she is qualified as associate professor in the scientific area 08/C1 Architectural Design and Technology (National Scientific Qualification).

Since 2018 she is responsible for coordinating IRISS Third Mission activities. In this regards, since 2022 she has been working as IRISS representative within CREO – Campania REte Outreach Network of the CNR, which brings together 26 institutes with offices in Campania Region and the CNR Committee of Guarantee (CUG). Since 2020 she is coordinator of the IRISS Management Support Office.

Research activities mainly deal with 2 macro-areas, although with frequent integration between them in relation to specific projects:

  • Recovery and enhancement of the built environment and cultural heritage;
  • Urban, territorial and landscape regeneration, reduction of territorial imbalances between central and peripheral areas.

She has participated – including as responsible and coordinator – in funded and curiosity-driven projects, research groups and technical-scientific studies, survey campaigns of built heritage in urban contexts, in peripheral and marginalized territories, marine protected areas, and coastlines. The overarching approach adopted ìs multiscalar and systemic and aims to consider the relationships between natural, settlement, socio-cultural and economic factors, investigating the changes affecting contemporary territories and cities. Activities are supported by collaborative approaches, action-research protocols, and Case Study approach.

She has held research positions at scientific institutions as well as teaching positions. In addition, she has supervised students in higher education courses. Author of numerous publications, speaker at national and international conferences, she has participated in scientific and organizing conference committees and held keynote lectures. Member of the Editorial Board of “Recupero, manutenzione e innovazione dell’ambiente costruito” Series, she is reviewer for scientific journals and international conferences and workshops.

She organizes and is involved in activities to transfer know-how to institutions, stakeholders, and local communities, to support processes of social innovation, capacity building and local empowerment. These activities are aimed at providing decision-support models for the enhancement of cultural heritage and landscape as assets of growing importance for the competitiveness of territories.
