#Viaggiarte – An integrated experiential system for cultural heritage enhancement and promotion based on cinematic virtual reality, augmented reality and social networking

Scientific Coordinator

Alessandra Marasco

Objectives and contents

The project is aimed at the development and testing of an innovative system for promoting the artistic and cultural heritage in the Campania Region. The proposed system is based an experience-centric model that aims at transforming the traditional visit to cultural heritage sites into a memorable experience for tourists through the use of smart technology. This model is based on a multi-dimensional and multi-stage view of the tourism experience at heritage sites. Specifically, it includes three interrelated dimensions of a technology-enhanced experience at cultural heritage sites:

  1. OFF-SITE, relating to the pre-visit stage of the visitor’s experience, is supported by a cinematic VR experience with wearable computing devices (OCULUS Rift). An immersive cinematic virtual reality experience based on a trailer which was shot at the heritage site with 360° cameras is designed to positively affect behavioural intentions to visit the heritage site, by influencing potential visitors’ awareness, interest, and anticipation of the experience.
  2. ON-SITE, relating to the “consumption” stage, when the visit takes place at the heritage site. In this stage, the model exploits the latest mobile AR technology to facilitate and enrich the experience onsite.
  3. ON-LINE, relating to both the pre and post visit stages of the cultural journey, which offers personalised, social media style itineraries based on user experience.

The Cimitero delle Fontanelle (Fontanelle Cemetery) in Naples was chosen from  among many potential sites to pilot test the prototype. The pilot test was designed based on the features of this specific cultural site and carried out in collaboration with the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Naples and ANM, which allowed the VR system to be set up at the Piazza del Municipio Metro Station.
