Massimo Clemente

Massimo Clemente has been Director of the Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development (IRISS) of CNR since July 1, 2020. Research Director in “Urban Planning and Landscape Enhancement” since 2001, he is Director of the Scientific Committee of RETE Association for the Collaboration between Ports and Cities, Research and Innovation Delegate for the Italian National Observatory for Sea Protection, President of the Council of Construction of Naples and Former Member of the Management Committee of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority.

He graduated in Architecture (1987, Corsicato Foundation Prize), specialized in Restoration of monuments and urban planning of historical centres at the University Federico II of Naples (1990), he has been carrying out research activities in the CNR since 1989.

The research activity is focused on sea and port cities with particular attention to the public dimension of sea and waterfront as common goods. The action research activity includes also the public engagement in urban regeneration and local development projects, based on maritime identity and on collaborative processes for the sustainable development of coastal territories.

He coordinated several research projects, advanced training and field experimentation on urban planning and urban regeneration, with particular attention to the sea-city-region systems, coastal urban areas and port waterfronts.

He is a professor since 1994 in the field of urban planning and evaluation disciplines and has taught in the Degree, Master and PhD courses of the Federico II University (2009-present), Uninettuno University (2019-present), Tor Vergata University of Rome (2005-2009), University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli (1998-2004), University of Palermo and University of Genova (2009-2015, PhD college).

In 1997 and 2001 he won the Della Rocca Foundation Prize for research monographs in the field of urban planning. In 2013 he obtained the national qualification as full professor in “Territorial and urban planning and design”.

He is a member of the scientific council and lecturer in the 2nd level Master in “Sustainable Planning and Design of Port Areas” (University of Naples Federico II) and in the 2nd level Master in “Emergency psychology” (University of Naples Federico II), Vice President of aniai Campania and member of the National Association of Italian Architectural Engineers, member of the Council of the Italian Society of Urban Planners (SIU), full member of the National Institute of Urban Planning (INU) and member of the Directors’ Board of the Campania Section. He was a member of the Aldo Della Rocca Foundation Board from 2007 to 2017.

He has published more than one hundred scientific papers, he is Associate Editor of Portus Plus the Journal of RETE Director and Coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the book series “Città e Architettura” of Editoriale Scientifica, Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Journal of Urban Culture TRIA “Territorio della Ricerca su Insediamenti e Ambiente”, Member of the Scientific Committee of the Review “Rassegna Aniai”.
