Giuseppe Pace has been a researcher at the CNR Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development since July 2023. Graduated with honours from the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ in Civil Engineering (1990), he had a fellowship at the Institute of Planning and Territory Management (I.Pi.Ge.T) (1991-93), a research fellowship at the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ (1993-94), and finally he has become a CNR researcher (1994). Currently, he is Chair and scientific responsible for COST Action CA18110 “Underground Built Heritage as catalyser for Community Valorisation” (2019-2023). He is an active member of several international associations in the field of local development, cultural heritage, and management of large projects in the field of transport. He is a European TAIEX expert and evaluator for the ERASMUS+ programme. In addition, he is a referee for ‘Papers in Regional Science’, ‘Research in transportation economics’, ‘Designs’ and ‘Sustainability’.

His research has as common denominator planning, from spatial to applied economics, with a focus on local identities and communities. His keywords are: Mediterranean cities, sustainable development, decision-making processes, large transport infrastructures, innovation systems, collective learning processes, social networks, and sustainable transitions.

He has collaborated with several Italian and foreign academic institutions such as Naples, Milan, Haifa (IL), Ghent (BE) and Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK). He was Research Associate at the University of Ghent (Belgium) (2008-2018), Seconded National Expert (SNE) at the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission in Brussels (2003-2007), where he was coordinator of the evaluation of Trans-European Transport Network projects. He also carried out scientific support activities at the Strategic Plan Metropoli Terra di Bari, the European Commission, and several private organisations in the field of sustainable mobility.
