The CNR-IRISS will host a hybrid side-event in the frame of the New European Bauhaus Festival, on 13th June 2022, in Naples.
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Services for Development of National Research Council of Italy (CNR-IRISS), on 13 June 2022 will host the side-event “Energy, Beauty, Participation: Cultural Heritage Adaptive Reuse as driver of Circular Regeneration and Sustainable Regional Development”, in the frame of the New European Bauhaus Festival.
The event will consist of a sharing of results of European-funded research and innovation projects such as H2020 Be.CULTOUR, CLIC, REFLOW, Open Heritage, as well as other international projects such as Charter and Cultural Heritage in Action, structuring a dialogue with policy makers, entrepreneurs and civil society organisations engaging them in the implementation of the circular human-centred model for urban and territorial regeneration.
Indeed, complex interconnected challenges, global geo-political crisis, the rapid changes occurring in the organisational structure of countries and territories, highlight that the advancement of a circular organisational model based on a higher level of cooperation towards resilience and higher self-sufficiency is needed. The search of a more re-territorialized and circular model in the geographical space is becoming urgent. The circular and human-centred economic model developed in the last years through European funded research can be a way to turn challenges into opportunities for our society. In particular, the implementation of the circular economy model in all production and organisational sectors is fundamental to cope in the next future, de-carbonizing the global economy. This circular model can and should be applied also to territorial regeneration, adopting a paradigm shift in which economic values co-exist and co-evolve with social/human values, thus allowing the implementation of a human-centred strategy for circular and sustainable territorial development. Instead than being a secondary element, cultural heritage has a pivotal role in addressing the current challenges. First, it contributes to cultural identity, shared values and wellbeing of communities, which is fundamental to avoid a societal crisis under forces of isolation and distrust, through cooperation, participation, innovative collaboration models. Also, cultural heritage recovery and adaptive reuse can become a driver of economic regeneration at local level supporting jobs creation and maintenance through building construction activities, cultural tourism, cultural and creative activities, local social economy, RD&I and knowledge economy, as well as being an occasion to re-organise the energy supply and demand in the historic built environment (e.g. historic urban areas, cultural landscapes, historic port areas, etc.). Finally, cultural heritage and cultural landscape contribute to address climate change, as well as to enhance the beauty and attractiveness of cities and regions, if circular models are implemented.
These are the main topics the event will focus on, conceived as an opportunity to deepen project themes, which will be discussed by speakers from different project partners; international networks of cities and regions such as ICLEI and ERRIN will discuss the challenges for the implementation of the circular city from the point of view of local governments. In addition, the debate will be intended as an opportunity for comparison with international organisations interested in cultural heritage such as ICOMOS.
The conference will be opened by Arch. Massimo Clemente, Director of the CNR-IRISS, lead partner of the CLIC and Be.CULTOUR projects.
The event will be hybrid (in presence and online) and will be organised in Naples (Italy), in the Institute of the CNR-IRISS in Via G. Sanfelice, 8.
All additional information will be published on the Be.CULTOUR website.
