Business and Human Rights Summer School 2019

The Summer School, has provided the 29 participants coming from all over the world (students, researchers, NGO campaigners, lawyers, CSR corporate experts) with comprehensive knowledge of the legal mechanisms and tools applicable in the field of business and human rights, while keeping up with the main challenges concerning the contemporary debate on business and human rights and with current relevant developments at national, regional and international level.

The Course focused on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, adopted in 2011, as well as on their implementation at national and international level. Particular attention was devoted to the development of corporate human rights due diligence mechanisms by business actors.

The Summer School gathered major leading experts in this field area. Prof. Michael Addo, former member of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights, gave the keynote speech during the opening ceremony of the Summer School hosted by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Human Rights (CIDU) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Other distinguished experts and academicians in B&HRs holding insightful lectures were: Daniel Augenstein (Tilburg Law School), Nadia Bernaz (Wageningen University & Research); Carmen Márquez Carrasco (University of Sevilla), Pasquale De Sena (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), Tara Van Ho (University of Essex); Daniel Leader (Leigh Day); Jernej Letnar Černič (Graduate School of Government and European Studies), Robert McCorquodale (University of Nottingham), Ron Popper (The Global Business Initiative on Human Rights), Cedric Ryngaert (Utrecht University). The Summer ended with the final roundtable led by Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque, judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

The Summer, the first in Italy concerning this subject-matter, is the result of the scientific collaboration of CNR-IRISS with the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, the University of Milan, the Human Rights International Corner NGO.
