35th RETE Meeting “(Re)tooling the Port City Territory: People, planning and participation”

Massimo Clemente, director of the Institute for research on innovation and services for development of the National Research Council of Italy (Cnr-Iriss) and Scientific Director of RETE, Association for the Collaboration between Ports and Cities, Gaia Daldanise, researcher at Cnr-Iriss, and Barbara Bonciani, Associate to Cnr-Iriss, will participate in the 35th RETE Meeting, “(Re)tooling the Port City Territory: People, planning and participation”.

The event, which will be held in Delft from December 2nd to 4th, is organized in collaboration with PortCityFutures, a research center of three Dutch universities focused on the space, society, and culture of the territories of port cities, and UFM, an intergovernmental institution that brings together 42 countries to promote dialogue and cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

Scholars, as well as professionals from different areas of expertise, have recognized the role that port city territories can play in light of addressing the current global challenges. This requires spaces and resources that both port and city compete for. Therefore, it is necessary to conceive new spatial, socio-cultural, and political tools that enable shared learning, co-creation, and pertinent communication to stimulate strategic thinking and forge realistic dialogue between multi-scalar stakeholders for the port city territory. These tools need to be developed together with methodologies that assess cross-sectoral interests, resource availability and the governance structures.

The meeting will bring together during these days the experiences of academics and professionals who work on the role that port cities can play in global challenges, especially in relation to the integration of common spaces and resources. On Friday, December 3, Massimo Clemente, Gaia Daldanise, and Barbara Bonciani will take part in the round table focusing on successful cases of port-city relationship and integration from Europe, presenting the experiences developed within the RETE Advanced Nodes of Naples and Livorno. The activities fall within the research, started in 2015, on collaborative decision-making processes for the port-city system carried out by the Cnr-Iriss research group coordinated by Massimo Clemente with Eleonora Giovene di Girasole and Gaia Daldanise.
